ASFALT is a multi-day urban festival for street culture, from free runners, street artists and BMXers to skaters, rappers and basketball players. For its visual identity, Ghent-based multidisciplinary design studio TOYKYO decided to work with a clear, yet bold, colour-blocking system. This system seamlessly combines with imagery and videos of the festival’s sporting disciplines. Its flexibility allows it to easily adapt to different sizes, allowing the motion design to flourish within its simplicity.

The City as a Playground

ASFALT was conceived as a festival where sports, art, and music meet. Over several days, athletes, artists, and performers take over public space, turning the city into a place for movement, creativity, and expression.Competitions, performances, and demonstrations take place across locations throughout the city, with the streets themselves becoming the festival grounds. In this setting, disciplines overlap and audiences experience the many facets of contemporary street culture.

Colour in Motion

For the visual identity, we developed a clear yet striking colour-blocking system. The bold graphic shapes form a flexible framework that seamlessly integrates photography and video of the festival’s different disciplines.

The system allows action imagery to remain central while providing a strong, instantly recognisable graphic structure. Its simplicity enables it to scale easily across formats, from posters and social media to motion graphics, while maintaining a consistent and energetic visual language.

From Identity to Environment

Our work extended beyond the graphic identity. The scope of the project included developing the festival name, designing the logo, creating promotional materials and merchandise, designing the website, and branding the physical installations used during the event.

These installations included a mobile container with a basketball hoop, a climbing wall, and a skate ramp, bringing the visual identity into the festival's physical space and turning it into an immersive spatial experience.

Together, these elements ensured that ASFALT’s identity was not only visible across communication channels but also present throughout the festival environment itself.
